Our Approach
Improving Access to Education:
We partner with remote and rural communities to ensure that children have the opportunity to attend school. This includes building and refurbishing school infrastructure, providing learning materials, and addressing barriers that prevent children from enrolling in and attending school regularly.
Enhancing the Quality of Education:
We support teachers through training programs to improve teaching methodologies and classroom management. Additionally, we engage with parents and the wider community to foster a supportive environment for children’s education.

We work to empower communities across Kenya through education, protection, and opportunity. Here’s how.
Education Support- Inclussive Basic and Early Childhood Education
We help children access education from early years through secondary school. Our programs improve school facilities, provide learning resources, and support students beyond the classroom so they can succeed in life.
Early Childhood Education is for the critical years in children’s lives where valuable relationships are developed and their overall emotional, social and physical development is shaped for early learning and later success. The inclusive Early Childhood Development (ECD) intervention in rural areas of Gilgil Sub-County in Nakuru, Laikipia North Subcounty, Machakos and Turkana in Kenya, aims to develop the holistic delivery of ECD including cognitive skills, health, nutrition and social development in the community and established ECD centers for pre-school children aged 3+ years and their families. The project envisions increased knowledge about vital issues connected with ECD that together will produce a more integrated and holistic mode of service delivery in ECD, especially among the most deprived, most isolated and least able to access early learning, thereby meeting the developmental needs of pre-school children and their families. The project aims to achieve: improved rates of access for pre-school children to integrated ECD learning; improved rates of literacy and numeracy among parents; increased linkages of ECD Centers with government provision in health, nutrition and sanitation and increased skills capacity among ECD teachers. We expect that inclusion at pre-school level will be improved through disability access improvements at ECD Centers and sensitization on knowledge and sensitivity to disability in project locations.
Livelihood Support - Creating Stronger Families
Build Africa Kenya works with farmers in rural communities of Kenya (Counties of Nakuru, Laikipia, Machakos, Turkana and Siaya) through a community partnership model that focuses on supporting them make informed choices on improving their farming practices that will lead to increased income sources and support for their children’s education. Agriculture is Africa’s biggest employer. In Eastern Africa, 70% of the population, most of whom live in extreme poverty make a living from farming. Agriculture is the engine of economic growth in Kenya with about 75% of Kenyans earning all or part of their income from this sector which accounts for 33% of the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP). Despite continuous population growth, agricultural productivity has stagnated in recent years. We therefore work with communities to identify viable interventions that address issues around farming including post harvesting losses, lack of modern agricultural skills, low quality and quantity of agricultural produce and low market access. BAK is currently addressing this by working with 1,500 farmers (structured into 10 Community Based Organisations) in Laikipia and in the rural areas of Gilgil and Elburgon in Nakuru County. The support is structured in four value chains; dairy, poultry, potato and avocado and is centered around capacity building, establishing demonstration plots, Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLA) and leadership training, start-up kits, cash transfers and grants. We are also working with caregivers in Turkana County to improve their livelihood opportunities so that they can better support education of their children.
Child Safeguarding - Safety and well-being of Every Child
Children deserve to grow up safe. We work with communities to prevent abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
Child protection and the overarching safeguarding is at the core of all our projects as we closely work with children. We work to strengthen existing systems at the community and school level on child safeguarding policies and procedures through establishing awareness and good practice in working with children and keeping them safe all the time. We also build the capacity of parents, community leaders, teachers, school management and stakeholders that we work with on raising awareness of potential harm/risks, preventing harm or abuse from happening, reporting and referral mechanisms for child safeguarding concerns and responding appropriately to issues of child safeguarding. We also work in collaboration with other stakeholders and partners including governmental, nongovernmental agencies, CSOs and community-level groups working together in a similar context to address and minimize threats to children’s rights and their protection.
WASH and Education in Emergencies
We support WASH through participatory needs assessment, developing a plan of action as well as prioritizing and mobilizing resources for school development in all our supported schools in Nakuru and Turkana Counties. BAK is also providing education in emergencies to the refugee populations in Kakuma. Our interventions focus on improving access as well as quality. On access, we support communities through disability friendly infrastructure development (building new classrooms, renovating classrooms, building new toilets as well as renovating existing toilets, building ICT rooms, admin blocks, teacher houses, science laboratories). We also provide sanitary towels, water tanks, pupils/ teacher’s furniture, learning materials and sports equipment. On quality, we focus on facilitating teacher training and training for schools boards of management on matters of WASH. Supported schools benefit from construction learning spaces and WASH facilities for both boys and girls including girl friendly toilets complete with changing rooms as well as water supply. They also benefit from dignity kits comprising of pants, soaps and sanitary wear as well as training on making reusable sanitary towels. Teachers are trained on friendly pedagogical skills from which manuals on
child friendly teaching practice were developed. School Management Boards (BOM) also benefit from training on administration, management, school development plans, prioritizing and mobilizing resources for development while pupils benefit from trainings especially on health and hygiene with schools receiving material support to establish strong student clubs.

We don’t work alone. We bring together local leaders, schools, and families to build better education systems and long-term solutions that communities can own.
