Who we are

Build Africa Kenya

Build Africa Kenya, affiliated to Street Child-UK, is a national Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) registered under certificate OP.218/051/95217/621 by the NGO Coordination Board.

It was Initially incorporated as Partners for Progress in 1996, then changed names in 2010 to Build Africa Kenya.

We believe in the Power of Education to eradicate poverty. We work to provide children the education they need to fight the inequalities and barriers that stand in their way.

Build Africa Kenya partners with rural communities where children are leaving school without vital basic skills to succeed in life. Our unique approach is to mobilize parents, teachers, school managers, community leaders, local and national government as well as other actors to partners with remote and rural communities where children are leaving school without vital basic skills.

Our unique approach then mobilizes parents, teachers, school managers, local and national government as well as other actors to create sustainable, effective schools and to nurture children's learning. We seek to ensure every Child has access to school, every child in school is learning and every child leaves school with the skills they need to be functional in the society and lead happy successful lives.

SENIOR MANAGEMENT

Mr. Raphael Sungu
Mr. Raphael SunguCountry Director

Raphael is an educationist, a teacher by profession, with 10 years teaching experience, he has taught both the Kenyan system as well as the British National Curriculum before joining development work. He has over 16 years of both Humanitarian and Development work. He worked in Sudan under a USAID funded project for 6 years from 2006 following the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in 2005 establishing structures for the government of South Sudan especially training of civil servants. He later worked for Windle International Kenya, a leading NGO in humanitarian work in both Daadab as well as Kakuma Refugee Camps, at the latter, being in charge of refugee secondary education as well as university scholarships to UK and Canada.

He has fundraised for major projects over the years supporting education and has been in charge of funding from DFID (currently called XXX), UNHCR, UNICEF, Comic Relief, Big Lottery Fund, Street Child-UK( its parent organization), Medicor Foundation as well as several other unrestricted donors; cooperates and individual givers. He holds an advanced degree in education with vast experience within the East Africa region.

Edina Wavinya
Edina WavinyaFinance and Administration Manager

Edina Wavinya is a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya -CPA(K)-Member of ICPAK(Accountants regulating body in Kenya);she holds a bachelor's degree in Financial Management as well as several short course and seminar certificates done in varied periods; these short courses include Strategic Financial Management for Non-Governmental Organizations as well as MBTI (Myres-Briggs Type Indicator-South Africa). She has 12 years' work experience with BAK, initially Partners for Progress and entered as Finance Assistant eventually growing to Finance Officer and currently Finance and Administration Manager

Aron Mativo
Aron MativoProjects Coordination and Development Manager

Aron joined BAK 7 years ago as an intern rising to the current position. He has been coordinating both education (ECD, primary and secondary school projects) and livelihood programmes. He is the BAK liaison person in charge of fostering relationships between BAK and government authorities including any other entities in Nakuru County.

He has a wealth of experience in projects design, planning, implementation, monitoring and reporting. He holds a BSC degree in Environmental Sciences and has done a couple of professional courses on project management.

John Ombugu
John OmbuguDeputy Finance and Administration Manager- Field Operations

John is a qualified Accountant with 18 yrs of experience both in the commercial sector, Audit and NGO sectors. He holds a degree in Business Management (Accounting Option) from Moi University and CPA-K and a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants Kenya (ICPAK). He has also attended several in-house trainings on Financial Management for NGOs including Taxation by NGO Coordination Board, KRA and Organizations Quality Improvement from USAID Health Care Improvement Agency.
He started working with B.O Omolo & Co-CPAK as an audit assistant for 2 years then joined the Real Estate Industry for 3 yrs as an Accountant. He later joined the NGO sector where he now has over 12 years of experience, having worked as a Regional Accountant at Africa Network for the Prevention and Protection Against Child Abuse and Neglect (ANPPCAN Regional Office) handling 10 Country’s projects budgets and consolidating their Financial Reports, coordination of both projects and Organization audits as well as being the contact person for all donor funded Projects; One year in the Audit field and an Auditor with Menya & Associates-CPAK and later joined Build Africa Kenya in 2015 as the Finance and Administration Officer for Kwale Girls Project, then as a Projects Officer for the USAWA and HESHIMA Projects and now as the Finance Officer based in the Head Office.
He has experience working on Budgets, Donor Financial Reporting and an understanding of Project implementation, administration, operations and Logistics

Mr. Caleb Kiprono Metto
Mr. Caleb Kiprono MettoChair to the Board

Caleb has ventured into entrepreneurship and is currently actively involved in driving the Government’s Big Four Development Agenda under the Affordable Housing Component. He has been involved in numerous local, regional (ECA) and international pro-youth initiatives and community development efforts that have equipped him with a wealth of knowledge and hands-on experience in organizational development (OD), leadership, entrepreneurship, resource mobilization, value chain analysis, communication, technical writing, project management and M&E among others.

He founded the Youth Agency for Development of Science, Technology and Innovation (YADSTI), a multidisciplinary initiative of young scientists working to promote Science, Technology and Innovation (ST&I) as a tool for sustainable development in Kenya. He represented the youth voice in several policy platforms such as the National Agricultural Sector Partners (NASP) Forum - Kenya, the Monitoring and Analyzing Food and Agricultural Policies (MAFAP) Project implemented by FAO, the African Science, Technology and Innovation (ASTI) Forum led by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and UNESCO, and the Changing Course in Global Agriculture (CCGA) Project implemented by the Swiss Development Corporation (SDC) and the Government of Kenya.

He has also served as a technical team member of the Swedish International Agricultural Network Initiative (SIANI) – local Chapter that is spearheading policy engagements towards realization of commercialization objectives for Kenya’s agricultural sector. Having benefited from the Jomo Kenyatta Foundation (JKF) education scholarship during his high school education, he was instrumental in the establishment of the Jomo Kenyatta Foundation Scholarship Beneficiaries Association, an organization that works to support the education of bright but needy students in Kenya to access secondary school education.

He was awarded a competitive scholarship by Millennium Institute (US) and Biovision Foundation (Zurich) to attend an intense technical training on Model-based Socio-economic Planning for Policy Analysis and Integrated Development using System Dynamics at the University of Bergen in Norway. He studied Computer Science at the University of Nairobi and has continued to improve his career standing by pursuing other professional certifications including online Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) on Coursera. These include Certified Public Accounts (KASNEB, Kenya), International Leadership and Organizational Behaviour (SDA-Universita Bocconi, Italy), Leading Strategic Innovation in Organizations (Owen Graduate School of Management, Vanderbilt University - USA), Design Thinking for Business Innovation (University of Virginia, USA), Innovation for Entrepreneurs: From Idea to Marketplace (University of Maryland, USA), New Venture Finance: Startup Funding for Entrepreneurs (University of Maryland, USA), and Questionnaire Design for Social Surveys (University of Michigan, USA) through correspondence. Caleb espouses enthusiasm and keen interest in socio-economic development and stands committed to participate in local, national and international development agenda and programmes.

Consolata Ngondi
Consolata NgondiVice Chair to the Board

Consolata is a Lawyer of 29 years experience. She is a past CEO of the International Commission of Jurists ( Kenya Section), and Programme Officer of various human rights organizations. She has also previously lectured law and is a current governance and gender consultant. At Build Africa Kenya, Connie is the organization's legal advisor as well as the Vice Chair to the Board.

Damaris Michoma
Damaris MichomaBoard Member

Damaris is an administrator with over 30 years’ work experience in procurement and HR management with international NGOs in telecommunication, sexual and reproductive health, economic research programmes and others in the social arena. A Board member of Build Africa Kenya who supports HR and Procurement policy development.

Alice Onono
Alice OnonoBoard Treasurer

Alice is a Bachelor of Commerce graduate with MBA in Strategic Management from University of Nairobi. Also a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya. A member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya. At Build Africa Kenya, Alice who is the Boards Treasurer, oversees financial management as well as organizational audit aspects.

Jacqueline Athieno
Jacqueline AthienoBoard Secretary

Jacqueline is a Human Resources professional with over 15 years experience in the International Development and Humanitarian sector. She has solid HR experience in System Development and Strengthening, Risk Management and Compliance, HR Information Systems and Management, Compensation and Benefits, Organization Development and Change Management among other strategic HR functions.
Jacqueline holds a Bachelor's degree in Human Resources Management, a Masters in Project Planning and Management from the University of Nairobi, post graduate Diploma from Institute of HRM - Kenya.
