Poultry feed formulation was facilitated in the 10 CBOs. Each CBO prepared 1 tonne of poultry feed to be sold to the members and the profit goes to the CBOs savings scheme. Each CBO members contributed 400kgs of maize germ which is locally available while BAK contributed 600kgs of raw materials.
The need for this activity arose out of the understanding that poor quality feeds can lead to slow growth, low egg production, diseases or even death as well as increasing cost of doing business. Through the feed formulation training it is expected that their chicken will grow faster, egg production will improve and there will be less chicken diseases/ deaths and resultant reduction in the cost of production by up to 50% thereby increasing profits. Farmers will therefore be able to earn more income from poultry as an agri-business venture hence better and sustainable livelihoods.
