Build Africa Kenya (BAK) supplied 3 chaff cutters and 10 choppers to 10 CBOs in Gilgil. The machines have been useful in feed preparation for dairy and poultry farming. Farmers have been chopping forage plants such as maize and sorghum to prepare silage (preserved fodder).
The silage is fed to dairy cows during the dry season when pasture is inadequate. To raise funds to service the machines, the CBOs have also been chopping fodder for both members and non-members at a reasonable fee. The money is channelled into the CBOs account for use in servicing the machines as well as growing the CBOs funds.
